The 10th Annual Scholarship Luncheon was a heartwarming affair for the University's outstanding scholarship recipients and generous alumni and friends who attended the event on Sunday, April 5, at the University Commons.

With more than 200 guests in attendance, it was a joyful opportunity for donors and student recipients to meet each other, many for the first time. Smiles abounded and spirits were high.

Speakers included Arnold Speert, president; Sandra Deller, vice president for institutional advancement; Joseph Douress '81, senior vice president of Global Marketing at Elsevier Medical Research Journals; and Erin Garolis, a recipient of the Natesha Eaton Memorial Scholarship and Class of 1958 Education Scholarship.

Douress related how he worked his way through college, like many of our students today. "The unique and enriched learning experiences I had at William Paterson provided a foundation for the professional and personal successes I've enjoyed over the past 25 years," he said.

Garolis recounted how she left William Paterson for a career as a dancer with the Walt Disney Company in 2001 and later as a singer for Sesame Street Live. She returned to William Paterson in 2007 as a single mother with two young children with developmental disabilities. Now a math major, Garolis relies on financial aid to attain her goal of teaching mathematics.

She expressed her heartfelt appreciation to all the donors who are "crucial to the existence of the scholarship program" and her personal thanks for providing a future for her sons.

During the 2008/2009 academic year there were 277 Foundation and Alumni Association Scholarships totaling more than $427,000.
