Certification Program

Becoming a supervisor has traditionally been sort of like becoming a parent: all of a sudden you’re expected to know how to do things for which you’ve never been trained nor had experience! And, just like with parenting, mistakes made in learning how to do the job can be costly. Often a person is promoted into a supervisory position because he or she performs certain skills well- skills that may have nothing to do with managing people. Once in the position, the new supervisor may be overwhelmed with the responsibilities of maintaining productive relationships with a number of people.

Help is at hand. The office of Professional and Organizational Development is offering a series of seminars designed to provide supervisors with the "tools" needed for effective people skills. Participants earn a certificate for completing the program, which is composed of eight modules specifically tailored to the William Paterson University environment. Documentation of the certification is then recorded in the Human Resources database and may be considered as a beneficial factor in employee evaluations.

Currently, all of the supervisors in Facilities have taken on the challenge of being the forerunners of this program. Many have already attended these highly interactive seminars, sharing their seasoned experience and learning from the experiences of others. Response to the program has been positive, and we encourage other supervisors to participate.

If you are interested in participating individually or as a unit in William Paterson University's Supervisor Certification Program, call Human Resources at x3555 or e-mail Franciscoc1@wpunj.edu for more information and upcoming schedules.
